Song Story

Growing up in Sunday school classes, I was always taught that God accepted Abel’s offering because he brought a beautiful sacrifice and that God rejected Cain’s offering because he brought old, rotten fruit and vegetables. I just figured God liked meat more than vegetables. Then one day I read what God had to say about it in Hebrews 11: “By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead” (v.4, NIV). What made the difference between Cain and Abel? Faith.

I also used to believe that God valued obedience more than anything. After all, “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22). But then I came across Romans 1:5, which says that “obedience…comes from faith.”

The writer of Hebrews explains it this way (v. 1-2, 6):
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for….And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Worship without faith is pointless. It doesn’t please God. But worshiping God with faith—in spite of our circumstances, just like the ancients did—pleases Him. “So let's do it—full of belief, confident that we're presentable inside and out. Let's keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word” (Hebrews 10:22-23, The Message).

Lyrics

Faith
Words and music by John Gabriel Arends

Well, I’m here now to worship You
I’m here now ‘cause I’m in love with You
I’m here now to seek You
I’m here now, I’m gonna find You

Lord, I come before You now
I believe You are who You said You are
I believe that You’ll do what You said You’d do
I believe there’s reward in seeking You

So Lord, I come before the throne of grace
I bring an offering—the best kind, my faith
‘Cause Lord, You are faithful to perform Your word
I will seek You and I will find You
